Description:
Illustrated Talk by Charles Sullivan about his Pilgrimages to Organs of Johann Sebastian Bach
Johann Sebastian Bach grew up in Thuringia, lived there for 30 of his first 32 years, and had composed most of his organ pieces by the time he left. Thuringian organs of the time sound very different to those nearby. So why do relatively few recordings of Bach’s organ music use Thuringian organs? And why did most organists here until recently know little or nothing about Thuringian organs of the time?
Charles Sullivan has visited Thuringia three times, twice spending a week exploring Thuringian organs with New Zealand organist friends. He will share pictures from those trips and illustrate the sounds of historic pipe organs there. En route, he attempts to find answers to the questions above and explore the limitations of what we know about what sounds Bach preferred for his organ compositions.
You are warmly invited to attend this event on Wednesday, 7 August 2024. Feel free to pass this on to other friends and family interested in German culture, language and the interrelationships between New Zealand and the German-speaking world.
