Description:
Talk by Moritz Fassbender
Moritz Fassbender, born 1984 in Bonn-Beuel, Germany, grew up in Oberpleis, a small village near Königswinter. After passing his final exams at school and completing his civilian service, he started an apprenticeship as an organ builder with the well-known organ-building company Klais in Bonn. During his apprenticeship, the company was working on a new instrument for the Auckland Town Hall, which gave him the opportunity to travel to New Zealand, where he got in touch with people from the South Island Organ Company in Timaru. There, he has been working since 2010, initially on a one-year fixed-term contract. However, during that time, he met his wife and, since then, started a family of his own in Timaru.
They are currently rebuilding the pipe organ at the Wellington Town Hall. This has truly been a long-term project for many years.
On Wednesday, 30 September 2026, we shall hear from Moritz. He will tell us about growing up in the village of Oberpleis, training to be an organ builder and coming to New Zealand to work on our organ, as well as what has kept him living in Timaru for nearly two decades.
This will be held at the Von Zedlitz Common Room 606 at Te Herenga Waka – Victoria University of Wellington, 28 Kelburn Parade, Kelburn, at 6:00 pm. Culinary contributions in the form of food and/or drinks are very welcome. Please RSVP by emailing us.
